Maike Gräf – ART Karlsruhe - Skulpturenplatz One-Artist-Show

Maike Gräfs figurative Holzskulpturen sind im Spektrum aktueller Kunst gänzlich einzigartig.
In ihnen verbindet sich ein sehr gegenwärtiges, von Reflexen auf die Zeichenwelt des Comics, der Street-Art und Computerspielen unterlegtes Menschenbild mit einem uralten künstlerischen
Handwerk. Bei der Begegnung mit den Werken der jungen Künstlerin sind nicht nur die von Sexualität, Geburt und Tod beherrschten Themen relevant. Ebenso spielen die historisch komplexe Ikonographie des Werkstoffes und die Besonderheiten seiner Bearbeitung eine Rolle.
Im Verlauf nur weniger Jahre seit ihrer Ausbildung als Holzbildhauerin von 2000 bis 2003 hat Maike Gräf mit beachtlicher Virtuosität eine unverwechselbare künstlerische Handschrift entwickelt, die die im Material eingeschriebene Tradition ganz bewusst neu verhandelt.

Maike Gräf’s figurative wooden sculptures are entirely unique within the spectrum of contemporary art.
They combine a very contemporary view of humanity – underpinned by references to the visual language of comics, street art and computer games – with an ancient artistic
craft. When encountering the works of this young artist, it is not only the themes dominated by sexuality, birth and death that are relevant. The historically complex iconography of the material and the specific characteristics of its treatment also play a role.
In the space of just a few years since completing her training as a wood sculptor from 2000 to 2003, Maike Gräf has, with remarkable virtuosity, developed an unmistakable artistic style that deliberately reinterprets the tradition inherent in the material.
