Isabelle Dyckerhoff deliberately eschews the ‘postmodern’ option of drawing on the rich repertoire of art history and reassembling it. In a sense, she remains true to Modernism and to Maurice Denis’s dictum: for her, every painting is initially a tabula rasa, which must first be covered in paint, regardless of the painter’s knowledge, experience and all her expertise. Yet, unlike many purists of abstraction, she does not attempt to suppress associations beyond the picture itself. However, it is left to the viewer to decide whether a colourful tapestry, a landscape, a window or a city skyline emerges in their mind’s eye. Ludwig Seyfarth
